Cardinal Hume Centre London

Our client approached us to assist with the internal and external renovations to the Cardinal Hume charity building.

Brief

The Cardinal Hume Centre development proposal involved the internal redevelopment and refurbishment of the charity building, to include spatial reconfigurations and interior design.

A small extension to the new entrance was designed to provide a draught lobby and focal point for visitors.

Key Challenges and Successes

  • The site is within a conservation area, so considerations had to be taken when altering the external appearance of the buildings.  A sympathetic approach was taken with the design of the new extension, ensuring the form, scale and appearance suited the existing building whilst meeting the clients brief and budget.

  • This scheme not only aided the expansion of the Centre, but enabled them to help more and more people in need. This redevelopment was created for the people who the charity support on a day-to-day basis, and we had the ability to create an enhanced, accessible and modern facility to provide a place of welcome for these people.

Design Process

Understanding the client needs was a key factor in the design process for this project and informed many of the design decision made.

Our approach focused on the spatial requirements of the volunteers, but just as importantly, the people who use the centre .

The interior design and visual enhancements to the existing building were key to delivering a space that make visitors feel welcome.

We tasked Gary and his team with transforming part of our charity’s premises – a large crypt and adjacent rooms in Central London – into a lighter, more accessible, flexible and welcoming space which is fit for the future. The architects worked with us every step of the way – taking time to understand the needs of all those using the space – before presenting us with plans which matched our brief and budget, and exceeded our expectations. Gary played a key part in the building process – liaising with contractors, and meeting with us when required. The completed build is absolutely stunning, and our staff, volunteers and clients are absolutely delighted with it.
