A new purpose-built exhibition space to display World War 2 memorabilia.
We have secured planning permission for an RAF Exhibition building located on the Lancaster Way Business Park, which has been commissioned to honour the legacy of everyone associated with RAF Witchford during World War 2.
During World War 2, approximately 4 million operational flights were made over Cambridgeshire by bombers in 1944 alone, many of which were conducted in Lancaster bombers emanating from both RAF Witchford and nearby RAF Mepal.
The proposals provide a new purpose-built exhibition space which aims to maximise the impact of artefacts that have been amassed over many years.
The building incorporates an interpretation of a Lancaster bomber fuselage, which will also be carried through into the inside of the building. Within the entrance lobby, visitors will have the opportunity of sitting within the structure of the fuselage and imagine themselves within the aircraft.
The interiors of the building will incorporate audio visual aids to reveal the personal stories and memories of life at RAF Witchford and Mepal. The scheme also involves enhancing the setting of the existing memorial plaque sited on the site, and an extension to the adjacent Apex Coffee House.
Works due to commence and complete during 2025.
