Over the past few months, our team has continued to grow alongside a busy pipeline of projects on site and in development.
We’re really pleased to now formally introduce Jonathan Mawer, who joined Gary Johns Architects at the beginning of February. Jonathan has quickly become a key part of the practice, making a positive impact across a number of live projects and helping us move schemes forward with the care and clarity we strive for.
One project in particular reflects this approach. We secured planning permission just before Christmas 2025 for alterations to a family home within the Snaresbrook Conservation Area, in the London Borough of Redbridge and have since been developing the detailed design ready for tender next month.
At the heart of the scheme is a client with complex physical needs. The design has been carefully developed to create a home that supports his day-to-day living, while also accommodating full-time care.
This includes adaptable spaces, clear separation between family and care environments, and strong connections to the garden to support wellbeing.
Alongside this, the project has required a thoughtful and considered response to a particularly stringent planning context. Working within a conservation area, the scheme carefully balances accessibility, design quality and environmental performance—refining the scale and form of the extension, responding to earlier planning challenges, and ensuring the proposals sit comfortably within their surroundings.
Sustainability has also been a key driver. The project transforms the performance of the existing building through fabric upgrades, improved airtightness, and the integration of low-carbon technologies including an air source heat pump and discreetly integrated solar panels—bringing a dated property in line with modern environmental standards.
We are now finalising the working drawing package and look forward to seeing the project progress to site.
Jonathan’s presence has already made a real difference within the practice, now helping to free up time to reconnect and share more of what we’re working on—we’re looking forward to doing more of that in the months ahead, and it’s great to have him as part of the team.
