Archie’s Home

A home adapted for Archie who is a wheelchair user following trauma at birth.

We were asked to work with the family due to concerns with the design prepared by a previous architect.  Following a meeting with the family, Case Manager and Occupational Therapist some deficiencies were identified.

We needed to ensure that Archie's room had no distractions to encourage him to stick to his sleep routine.  The therapy room needed to link to the garden to enable therapeutic activities within the garden such as a hot tub and as he gets older it would be used more as a living space and it would be beneficial for it to have a nice aspect.

The original design did not have a significant canopy to assist transfer from the car in the dry and a solid and level "apron" was required outside the house to replace the gravel so that he could manoeuvre his wheelchair easily.  An X-Y hoist was required in the existing living room and a separate interlinking arrangement to the bedroom, en-suite and therapy space.  The external hot tub with canopy was also designed to accommodate a X-Y hoist within the design to the rear garden.

We needed to ensure that the house worked for the whole family now and in the future so that Archie would be able to have some independence as he got older.

Due to the previous delays and the family being keen for work to commence on site as soon as possible it was decided to commence a working drawing package before planning was granted.  This helped to reduce the overall time scales of the project.

Work commenced on site in August 2022 and was completed September 2023.

From the very beginning we trusted Gary 100% that he had the eye, experience, expertise and would make the whole process much easier.  We knew that his ideas would be fabulous and would come together to create our home.  He made us feel like we were his only project that mattered, we were glad to share the experience with him and he always had time for our questions. He was there every step of the way for us and he was very proud of what had been achieved. I would be more than happy to recommend Gary and Gary Johns Architects for other families in the same situation and have already done so.” It was very special to find someone to work with to design our ‘forever home’ as there is nothing more stressful than the pressure of that.
