A new home, purpose built for Jakob who was diagnosed with a brain injury at birth.
Following diagnosis of a brain injury from birth, resulting in permanent problems with cognition, co-ordination and behaviour Jakob requires lifelong care. Luckily he is part of a close family and our brief was to design a home that would allow him to be supported by the family, but to also provide him with a level of independence as he grows older.
When we were introduced to the family an existing bungalow on a large plot had already been purchased. A planning application was submitted and secured to address the needs of all the family. However, due to the advent of covid and concerns with costs of labour and materials at the time it was eventually decided that it would be beneficial to consider a complete new build scheme that would not contain the compromises of the remodelled design.
This resulted in a design that retained the general principles of the original scheme and we were able to improve room sizes and ensure that each space had a strong visual relationship with outside.
The arrangement of the bedrooms, the therapy room and the carers space ensure that he can easily access the support and assistance he may require while also affording him a sense of privacy.
As Jakob grows older the house can effectively operate as two dwellings each with its own dedicated entrance whilst retaining a close link to his carers and family for structure and support.
Work commenced on site in December 2021 and was completed in February 2023.
