Peterhouse Avenue Great Yarmouth

We were asked by our client Orwell Homes to conceive a new development to replace a rather brutal three storey concrete framed block of flats.

Brief

Working closely with our client, the Borough of Great Yarmouth and the Police Liaison Officer, we worked to deliver an affordable housing scheme of two storeys set around an open courtyard space, creating a sense of place that resolved existing issues of anti-social behaviour.

Key Challenges and Successes

  • Sitting in the heart of an existing residential area, the existing building was dilapidated and dominated the properties immediately around it and generally created an environment for anti-social behaviour to breed.

Design Process

Working with the understated but solid aesthetic of the 1950’s ex-council housing surrounding the site, we strived to create a layered frontage with a mixture of sweeping roof lines, accentuated by Equitone boarding emulating zinc, and glass blocks punctuating the brickwork.

Despite the development being a continuous ribbon of development arranged around the courtyard, each front door has been given its own character, helping to provide a real sense of place and individuality.
